Hike Report

One of the best ways to enjoy winter wonderland is combining hiking with sledging. Especially if you have kids and are in search for a fun, not too difficult, hiking experience in winter. When searching for a winter hike, there are specific routes that are maintained and well-doable. One of them is called the Carl-Zuckmayer-Winterwanderweg in Saas Fee (fun fact: a path named after the famous writer Carl Zuckmayer, Saas-Fee’s most famous resident). which is parallel to a sledging route from Hannig to Saas Fee. It’s an easy hike, not too technical, with a total elevation of almost 550 meters. The good bit is that with a bit of luck, you can sledge all the way down in one go: a lot of winterly joy guaranteed!

Path up to Hannig

The hike starts in Saas Fee where you can come easily by bus from Saas Grund. If you come by car, you can park your car in the parking garage at the start of the village. In case you are wondering why you don’t see any cars in Saas Fee, well, it is a car-free village! The hike starts off nicely on paved roads through the village center. But well, whenever it is snowing the way it did the day we did the hike, you won’t notice any difference between paved roads and gravel paths anyways.

In order to get to the top, you simply follow the signs to Hannig. Note that there are multiple paths to get to Hannig. If you are planning on sledging down, make sure you follow the path on the South to go up (so can take the sledging route down on the northern path). If you want to hike both up and down, you can go either way.

First, the hike directs you through the village of Saas Fee and brings you to the valley station of the Hannig cable car. From there, the path guides you through the snowy forest above the mountain village of Saas Fee, with a beautiful view over the valley, the ski pistes and multiple >4000m peaks like the Dom, Alphubel, Egginer and Monte Moro.

To get down, simply pick up you sledge and follow the sledging route from Hannig back to Saas Fee. In case you are hiking down, you can follow this path as well or take one of the other paths down to the village. Lastly, there is also an option to take the cablecar from Hannig back to Saas Fee (make sure you check the timetable of the cable car as they usually have their last trip somewhere between 16:00-17:00). Enjoy the ride/hike!
